The Utah Highway Patrol Association's statement regarding roadside memorials.
A message from the UHPA President, Chad McWilliams
The habit of saying thank you is the mark of an educated man or woman. That being said, it does not mean that I am a smart man, but I am a grateful one. I am grateful for all Troopers, especially the ones that have paid the ultimate price. In the past few months, as you may be aware, we were dealt an unfortunate ruling regarding the memorial markers. The memorial markers will have to be moved and arrangements have been made to do so. Many of these markers will still be visible, if not more visible, than they were before. We have many great supporters of the Utah Highway Patrol and Utah Highway Patrol Association who have made this process easier. We are truly grateful for all the support and contributions we have received. As I have met with the families of these men, I feel I have gotten to know the Troopers whose names are upon those markers better. The common theme that I have received from the families is tradition and loyalty to the Utah Highway Patrol. Those individuals truly died for the “Beehive” that we wear on our uniforms. Because of these individuals, we have the responsibility to be worthy to wear that “Beehive”. I am grateful for the men and women who wear and have worn the “brown shirt”.
As we enter this legislative session, I would encourage everyone to become active in the political process. We can only get things achieved when we work together. We were only successful last year because we worked together, the Utah Highway Patrol Administration and the members of the UHPA. I am thankful for our State legislators who have supported us and continue to support us. Please take the time to contact your specific legislators and tell them thank you for what we have received.
So as we move forward in the year 2012, I believe the Utah Highway Patrol Association will continue to be successful because of who we are, as individuals and as an organization. The Utah Highway Patrol Association is one of the most respected organizations on the Hill and lets keep it that way.
